CCC State Representations

24/10/2018

Over the course of the year a number of Charles Campbell students have excelled at their chosen sports outside of school, resulting in representation for the state. This is a culmination of dedication, persistence and talent that has allowed these students to compete against some of the best individuals in their age group and in their chosen competitions. We hope that these students can continue to excel in their chosen sport fields and provide a positive role model for other students within the school community.

Tiegan Chau
Current year 11 student Tiegan Chau competing in the Australian National Championships for Gymnastics. Held in Melbourne in May, the week-long event catered to some of the best gymnasts from all around the country competing in a range of age groups and events. Tiegan, who has been involved in gymnastics since she was 10 years old at the Tea Tree Gully (TTG) Gymnastics club, trains three times a week to perfect her craft with her fellow gymnasts who comprised half of the 20 South Australian athletes to participate in the competition. Tiegan’s performance was highlighted by a 9th place finish in the vault final.

Jacob Collins
Jacob had the opportunity to represent South Australia at the NAB AFL U18 National Championships during July. Coming into the SA side for the 5th and final match of the carnival, SA were able to defeat Victoria Metro to cap off an undefeated campaign that resulted in being Premier of the division 1. Jacob was able to take his good form from the Norwood U18 season into the match, playing off the wing and half forward to be a solid contributor in the victory.

Fraser, Kobey & Darcy Getgood
On Saturday the 15/9, Kobey, Darcy and Fraser were part of over 50 competitors who represented their school in the inaugural Judo SA South Australian School Championships along with 6 other Judokas from Platinum Judo Club. The championships were a very successful event for all three boys within their weight divisions with Fraser placing 1st in the year 4-5 division, Darcy 1st in the 6-7 division, and Kobey 1st in the 8-12 division. Congratulations to the Getgood family!
Amer El-Hosni
Amer recently completed a five day camp in Melbourne as part of the Bachar Houli Football Academy. The Bachar Houli Academy takes the best Muslim Australian Rules football players in the country aged 18 and under on an all-expenses paid camp to Melbourne to undertake training, team and leadership development, recognition around their religion, and play a match against the Rookie Me Academy in Melbourne. Of the 26 footballers selected for the camp, Amer was the only player to come from South Australia having been chosen on his performances playing for Norwood football club. The experience was a one of a kind, with training sessions taking place at Richmond and Essendon Football Club’s headquarters, as well as a boot camp on the Peninsula, and meeting a variety of AFL players.

Levi Guy
Levi was a participant for SA in the 12 and under SAPSASA Rugby tournament held in Victoria Park, SA. The competition took place over 5 days with SA experiencing some tough matches against some of the more rugby dominant states such as Queensland and New South Wales. Levi, who is originally from Queensland, was able to play against some of his old school friends and thoroughly enjoyed his experience in the competition.

Diana Badalyan
Back in January this year, Diana was selected as one of four girls for South Australia to go to Melbourne and play the 2018 Talent 10’s National Carnival against girls from the other states and territories across Australia. The carnival took place at Melbourne Park, where the Australian Open is held, and consisted of 14 matches in total (7 singles, 7 doubles) over the week. Diana excelled in her match play, taking out 5 of her singles matches and winning all of her doubles to win the final and cap off a very exciting week. Being around Melbourne Park Diana was able to meet a host of Australian tennis stars, watch tennis players warming up for their Australia Open matches as part of the Australian Open experience, and visit the various courts and arenas. A great experience overall that Diana is looking forward to attending again next year!

Virtual War Memorial Fundraiser

16/10/2018

Picture
On Friday 12 October Mr Andrew Glasson, Dr Peter Provis, and Year 9s Lachlan Arthur and Euan Stenhouse attended the RSL's fundraiser, ‘Don’t Forget me Cobber’ for the Virtual War Memorial. This year's fundraiser also coincided with the 100-year anniversary of armistice for World War I (11/11/1918). Key speakers at the lunch included the Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson AO (below with Lachlan Arthur, left, and Euan Stenhouse, right), Major General Stuart Smith AO DSC (former Deputy Chief of Joint Operations) and Robert ‘Dogs’ Kearney OAM (Historian, Author and Mentor).

Charles Campbell College was invited to the event in acknowledgement of the school’s ongoing involvement and contribution to the Virtual War Memorial programme – in which students select a veteran soldier to research and build a biography of their life. Many of these biographies have been published on the Virtual War Memorial website and can be viewed by members of the public at https://vwma.org.au/.
